Little Thing

from The War in Iraq by David F. Bello

/

lyrics

I don’t think either of us know where we’re going.
The mall’s on the right side of the road,
if you end up coming this way.
Other than that, there are yellow lines
in the middle of the road;
white ones on the side,
white ones on the side,

small blue dots
along the interior upholstery
of the sports utility vehicle.

I don’t wear a seatbelt,
because for all I know,
it’s the only obstacle
between my upper body
and the window.

To my left!
You wear your hair in a bun with sunglasses on top,
like they just climbed the highest mountain
and are so high up

that they can see
the highway from here.
